Privacy Policy
The short version
- NoBookEnds talks only to the Audiobookshelf server you choose. We do not run a server that sees your books, your listening or your reading.
- There is no NoBookEnds account. We never ask for your name or email in the app.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking and no crash reporting SDKs.
- Your server sign-in is kept in your device's secure keychain.
- Purchases go through Apple or Google. We keep only an entitlement record tied to a random Purchase ID.
This policy explains how the NoBookEnds mobile app for iOS and Android ("the app") and the nobookends.com website handle information. The app is published by DanCue Digital LLC ("we", "us"). If you have questions, email [email protected].
1. Your Audiobookshelf server
NoBookEnds is a client for Audiobookshelf, a server you or someone you know runs. The app sends requests directly from your device to the server address you enter. That traffic does not pass through us and we cannot see it.
To work, the app sends your server the following:
- Your username and password, or an API key, when you sign in.
- Requests to browse your libraries, stream audio, download files and open ebooks.
- Your listening and reading progress, and play sessions.
- Basic device details so the server can tell your sessions apart: a random device identifier the app creates when it is first opened, the app's name and version, and the platform (iOS, or Android with its version number).
What your server does with that information is up to whoever operates it. If you use a server run by someone else, their own practices apply. If you connect over plain http://, that traffic is not encrypted; we recommend https:// for any server reachable from the internet.
2. Information stored on your device
- Sign-in tokens issued by your server are stored in the iOS Keychain or the Android Keystore through the operating system's secure storage.
- Your server list (server address, username and account details returned by the server) and the random device identifier are stored in the app's private storage.
- Settings and state, such as playback speed, skip intervals, reader preferences and the last book you had open, are stored in the app's private storage.
- Downloads (Premium) are stored in the app's private storage on your device. Progress you make while offline is kept in a queue on your device until it can be sent to your server.
This information stays on your device. It is removed when you remove a server in the app (for that server's data) or when you delete the app. Your device's own backup service (iCloud or Google) may include app data according to your device settings.
3. Purchases
Premium, Premium Family, tips and the Supporter plan are sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google process the payment; we never receive your card details, name, email or store account details.
To confirm and restore purchases, the app uses EntitleHub, an entitlement service operated by us. When you buy or restore, the app sends EntitleHub the store's transaction information (the product, the platform and the store's transaction identifiers and receipt) together with a random Purchase ID created by the app. EntitleHub verifies the transaction with Apple or Google and keeps a record of which entitlements (such as Premium) belong to that Purchase ID, with purchase, renewal and expiry dates. The Purchase ID is not linked to your name, email, Audiobookshelf account or anything you listen to or read.
We keep entitlement records for as long as they are needed to provide and restore your purchases, and as required for tax and accounting.
4. What we do not collect
The app contains no advertising, analytics, attribution, tracking or crash reporting software, and no third-party SDKs that collect personal data. We do not collect your location, contacts, photos or microphone. We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Apple and Google may collect information about app installs, purchases and crashes under their own privacy policies, for example if you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device settings. That data is governed by Apple's and Google's policies.
5. Permissions
The app uses network access to reach your server, and on Android, foreground service and wake lock permissions so audio keeps playing with the screen off. On iOS it uses background audio for the same reason. It does not request access to your location, contacts, camera, photos or microphone.
6. This website
nobookends.com is a static website. It uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts, and its fonts are served from this site. Like most web servers, the server that hosts it may keep short-lived technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) to keep the site secure and running. If you email us, we use your message and address only to reply.
7. Your choices and rights
- Remove a server from the app's Account screen to delete its sign-in, downloads and saved state from your device, or delete the app to remove everything it stored.
- Your listening history and progress on your Audiobookshelf server are managed on that server.
- To ask about, or delete, an entitlement record, email [email protected] with your Purchase ID or store order number. Deleting it may stop Restore Purchases from working.
- Manage or cancel a Supporter subscription in your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings.
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or California law), you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information. Because we hold so little, most requests are covered by the steps above; we will respond to any request sent to the address below.
8. Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app does not collect personal information from anyone.
9. Security
Sign-in tokens are kept in the platform's secure storage, and the app connects only to the server you enter. Purchase verification with EntitleHub uses encrypted HTTPS connections.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
